No sky-high performance: RTX 4060 was weaker than RTX 3070 Ti

Some time ago, the results of testing the RTX 4090 video card in the 3DMark Time Spy benchmark appeared on the Internet, it turned out that in synthetics the new generation flagship video card is twice as powerful as the RTX 3090 Ti, which, of course, cannot but rejoice. Such a performance increase will more than cover all the needs of 4K gaming, but more affordable video cards received a much less impressive performance boost. And that could actually just be a huge problem for those who wanted to get a graphics card below the RTX 4080 – it just might not make sense.

It’s all about the statement of the insider Kopite7kimi, who said that the RTX 4060 video card runs on the PCI x8 interface – this pretty much cuts down on the capabilities of the GPU and, of course, the overall capabilities of the new product. Due to this deliberate decision by NVIDIA engineers, the new RTX 4060 graphics card turned out to be on par with the performance of the RTX 3070, while the RTX 3070 Ti is even ahead of the upcoming new product. In the same 3DMark Time Spy benchmark, the new product scores less than 7 thousand points, which puts it exactly in the middle between the RTX 3070 and its Ti version, which means that there is no talk of an insane performance boost.

For example, if you compare the RTX 4060 with the RTX 3060 Ti, it turns out that the new graphics card is only 18% more powerful than its Ti competitor. Yes, compared to the RTX 3060, the performance increase is as much as 69%, but keep in mind that the RTX 3060 was originally a “people’s” video card with rather mediocre performance – it was released to make it possible to buy an inexpensive RTX 30 series video card. Moreover, you need to understand that now we are talking about synthetic tests in which engineering samples or video cards with special drivers are tested. Accordingly, in real gaming scenarios, the increase will be even lower – at the level of 10-15%, as is the case with the transition from RTX 20 to RTX 30.

And in fact, it sounds more than logical – NVIDIA retains its traditional approach to the lineup. New-generation RTX graphics cards with an index of 60 in the name get performance at the level of previous generation models, but from the line with an index of 70 and 70 Ti. The huge performance boost in the RTX 4090 is easily explained by the fact that NVIDIA needs to cheer up the audience with a bright presentation with impressive graphics – without a flagship model, it would be simply impossible to impress gamers with a 10-15% increase.
