No water or foam: a fire blanket for cars invented

A car engulfed in flames is a frightening phenomenon. A fire like this can quickly get out of hand and put it out – a daunting task. Moreover, this can happen both with cars with internal combustion engines and with modern electric vehicles. For example, in April, firefighters spent more than 120 thousand liters of water to extinguish a Tesla Model S electric sedan that crashed into a tree and were able to extinguish the fire only four hours later. But the new invention of the Norwegian company Bridgehill will extinguish a burning car in the shortest possible time without water and foam.

According to the Motor1.com portal, Bridgehill has presented the best solution for extinguishing a fire in a car – a fire blanket that will cover the entire car and will extinguish the flame, depriving it of oxygen. The fact is that such fires can be toxic – countless chemicals enter the environment, and the air is filled with poisonous smoke when firefighters try to extinguish the fire with water. Bridgehill engineers say that their development will extinguish the fire in minutes, avoiding the listed hazards. And if we are talking about electric vehicles, whose lithium batteries can continue to burn even without oxygen, then such a blanket will isolate the fire until the firefighters arrive.

The Bridgehill fire blanket measures 6 meters by 8 meters, which means it will fit most vehicles of a wide variety of brands and sizes. The blanket weighs 28 kilograms. All you need to do in a fire is to spread the blanket on the ground, then pull it over the burning car and make sure the edges of the blanket are snug against the ground. The manufacturer recommends leaving the blanket in this position for at least 20 minutes to ensure that the fire is extinguished, and only professional firefighters should remove it, because a fire blanket does not cancel the mandatory call of firefighters to the place.

Bridgehill offers two types of blankets – standard for personal use and professional. The Pro model can be reused up to 30 times, making it ideal for firefighters and other safety organizations.
