Concerned about the future of machines, the British-Canadian scientist Geoffrey Hinton 76, resigned from Google in 2023 so he could speak freely about dangers of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) . This Tuesday (8), he received the Nobel Prize in Physics . Check out what he says below.
A pioneer of artificial intelligence, the physicist said he realized that computers could become smarter than people much earlier than he and other experts expected. “I’m just a scientist who suddenly realized that these things are getting smarter than us,” Hinton told CNN last year.
“I want to kind of send a signal and say that we should be seriously concerned about how to stop these things from controlling us.”
The researcher warned that AI “knows how to program [e que]then she will discover ways to get around the restrictions we place on her. She will find ways to manipulate people into doing what she wants.”
Alongside Hinton, American scientist John Hopfield was also awarded the Nobel of Physics in 2024 this Tuesday.
