Belarusian human rights defender Ales Bialiatski, the Russian Human Rights Organization Memorial and the Civil Liberties Center for the Ukrainian Human Rights Organization were awarded the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.
“Nobel Peace Prize laureates represent civil society in their home countries. For many years, they promoted the right to criticize power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens.
According to the awards committee, they were responsible for a remarkable effort to document war crimes, human rights abuses and abuse of power. And they also demonstrate the importance of civil society for peace and democracy.
Bialiatski was one of those responsible for starting a democracy movement in Belarus in the 1980s, dedicating his life to promoting democracy and peaceful development in his country.
He founded the organization Viasna in 1996 to respond to constitutional amendments that gave the Belarusian president dictatorial powers. The entity provided assistance to detained protesters and their families. Later, he began to document and protest against the torture suffered by political prisoners.
To be silenced by the authorities, Bialiatski was arrested between 2011 and 2014. After speaking out against the government, he was detained again in 2020, where he remains until today, without trial.
