The Peace Nobel 2022 is announced today, which is expected with particular interest at a global level. And while the full list of nominations is secret, those who have made proposals can reveal them.
The favorite is the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. According to a Reuters survey of Norwegian lawmakers, those who have nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize include Belarus opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, Pope Francis, Myanmar’s National Unity Government, formed by opponents of last year’s coup in the country, the Tuvalu’s foreign minister Simon Coffey, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, WHO, British naturalist David Attenborough.
The announcement will be made on Friday at 12.00 Greek time at the Norwegian Institute Nobel in Oslo, by the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen. THE award ceremony will take place at Oslo City Hall on December 10, anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel. This year there are 343 candidates, although the list of their names has remained secret for 50 years.

The prize should be awarded to the person who has made the greatest contribution to “fraternization among nations, the abolition or reduction of existing military forces, and the establishment and promotion of peaceful assemblies.” Thousands of people can suggest names: members of governments and parliaments, sitting heads of state, university professors of History, Social Sciences, Law and Philosophy, and past awardees of Peace Nobelreports the Athens News Agency.
Who decides?
Norway Nobel Committeewhich consists of five people who are appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. Members are sometimes persons who have retired from active politics. The current committee is headed by a lawyer and the members include an academic.
All these persons are nominated by Norwegian political parties and their appointment reflects the balance of power in the Norwegian parliament.
What does the awardee receive?
A medal, a diploma, 10 million Swedish kroner (900,000 dollars) – and of course immediately attracts the attention of the whole world.
