Nobel Prize in Literature, Vargas Llosa says he prefers Bolsonaro to Lula

Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa said this Wednesday (11) that between President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and former President Lula (PT), he “prefers Bolsonaro”.

The declaration was given by the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010 when he participated in an event at the Center for Development Studies (CED).

“Bolsonaro’s case is a very difficult case. Bolsonaro’s antics are very difficult to admit, for a liberal,” said Vargas Llosa.

“Now, between Bolsonaro and Lula, I prefer Bolsonaro, from now on. [Mesmo] with Bolsonaro’s antics, Lula, no,” he added.

The writer also said that “Bolsonaro is not a candidate that arouses our enthusiasm, and he made many serious mistakes in government”.

However, he emphasizes that his impression is that “Brazil, in this last government, got rid of the phenomenon that embraces our continent, which is that of corruption”.

“Brazil is an extremely difficult case to explain. Lula was in prison and it was not us who condemned him, it was the Brazilian judges who rightly condemned him,” said the Peruvian.

“I met the judge [Sergio Moro] who sent him to prison. And he is a man who strikes me as one of absolute integrity. A man absolutely guided by principles of morality, decency and respect for the law,” he concluded.

Although he demonstrated to be aligned with leftist ideas during his youth, including supporting Fidel Castro’s Cuban revolution, Vargas Llosa progressively leaned to the right between the 1970s and 1980s. In 1990, he ran for the presidency of Peru in the center-right coalition Fredemo right, but lost to Alberto Fujimori.

In the last Peruvian elections, Vargas Llosa supported the candidacy of the former dictator’s daughter, Keiko Fujimori, who was narrowly defeated by the leftist Pedro Castillo.
