Nobody Gets Smallpox From Monkeys Because They’re Gay, Virus Affects Everyone, Doctor Says

“Nobody catches monkeypox because they are gay”, explained Rico Vasconcelos, a doctor and researcher at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of USP, to CNN Radio.

Brazil has more than 100 registered cases of monkeypox and, according to the specialist, “what happens is that the virus can be transmitted to anyone who has close contact with someone who is sick”, through saliva or contact in which there is exchange droplets with an infected person.

“Right now, in July 2022 in Brazil, the cases are more concentrated among gay men, as if it were raining for everyone, but more in the backyard of gay men and so they have to be more attentive.”

He stresses, however, that “in a few weeks or months”, another group may be hit the hardest.

“The good news is that this is a benign disease, after the symptoms, in a few weeks the person heals alone, there is no lethality”, he added.

Even so, he warns that the disease is not considered sexually transmitted, but that sexual contact, as there is proximity and exchange of droplets, is conducive to catching the disease.

“If she’s using a condom, she’s not protected against monkeypox.”
