In an interview with the public channel TV Brasil, in October 2021, José Mauro Ferreira Coelho, the name nominated by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) this Wednesday (6) for the presidency of Petrobras, defended international price parity for fuels in the country.
“We have to have domestic market prices related to import parity prices. Because if that were not the case, we would not have any economic agent with the aptitude or desire to bring derivatives to the domestic market. And that could lead to shortages for the country.”
Raquel Landim, economics analyst at CNNrecalls that this was exactly the argument of General Joaquim Silva e Luna, current president of the state-owned company, to readjust fuel prices, since Brazil does not dominate oil refining.
From the point of view of the company’s minority shareholders, Landim learned, the view is “the lesser of evils”. “At least, this entire framework that was assembled at Petrobras, had a fire test and passed”, assesses Landim.
