Nord Stream Explosions: “Very Serious, Very Suspicious, Needs Full Investigation”

The leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines they constitute a very serious and highly suspicious incident, but a full investigation is needed to determine what happened, said a Western official who did not want to be named. “For pipelines it is clear that it looks very serious. The multiple simultaneous explosions – it’s very serious and should be investigated,” he said.

“Obviously it looks very suspicious, but I think we have to establish the facts and then assign responsibility,” he added.

Denmark’s defense minister said the inspection of the sections of the two Nord Stream pipelines hit by undersea explosions off a Danish island in the Baltic would not be possible for a week or two.

“It might take a week or two before there’s enough calm in the zone to see what happened.”Morten Bondskov told the Danish media after his meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels, as reported by international agencies and relayed by the Athens News Agency.

The gas leak has caused a commotion over a wide radius in the marine area of the incident, hindering on-site investigations for the time being.

Two earthquakes suggestive of explosions were recorded on Monday by seismographic stations in Denmark, Sweden and Germany, the Geological Survey of Denmark announced yesterday.

The first tremor struck at 00:03 GMT and measured 2.3 on the Richter scale, and the second at 17:03 GMT measured 2.1, the statement said.
