Hundreds of millions of euros from a total of 10 billion euros provided by the European Union to support Turkey’s accession course, are allegedly channeled by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government to finance spy businesses throughout Europe. The funds – which were disbursed through the EU’s pre -accessible assistance mechanism (IPA), since Turkey acquired a candidate regime for the integration of a country – were initially intended to support political and administrative reforms for the purpose of harmonizing the country with the European standards. Between 2014 and 2024, Turkey received 4 billion euros from the total distribution. As part of the current programming period, Ankara is going to take a significant part of the € 14.32 billion budgeted for IPA in the period 2021–2027.
