Russia said on Tuesday that any normalization of relations with the United States would require the withdrawal of sanctions against Moscow.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was answering a question about a Reuters report that the United States is making a plan to potentially give relief to sanctions to Russia, as President Donald Trump seeks to restore bonds with Moscow and stop war in Ukraine.
“It’s probably too early to say anything. We have not heard any official statement, but anyway, our attitude towards sanctions is well known, we consider them illegal, ”said Peskov.
“And of course, if we talk about normalizing bilateral relations, they need to be released from this negative burden from so -called sanctions.”
The US and other Western countries imposed waves of sanctions against Russia because of the war in Ukraine.
The Reuters report cited a US authority and another person familiar with the matter by saying that the White House asked the state and treasure departments to elaborate a list of sanctions that could be alleviated for US officials to discuss Russian representatives in the coming days.
