U.S. automaker Shyft said on Tuesday that it expects to start assembling a mid-size electric van in the United States in mid-2023, marking the entry of yet another competitor into the electric commercial vehicle market.
The company will begin delivering the vehicles in the second half of this year for customer testing, Chief Executive Daryl Adams said.
Factory details are still being finalized, but it will have an initial annual capacity of 2,500 vans. Shyft still plans to build new manufacturing facilities in the country, Adams said.
The Shyft van will have a range of 240 to 280 kilometers, more than that can be achieved if larger batteries are added. Adams declined to say which company will supply the batteries or what the van’s starting price will be.
Shyft said last June that it planned to offer an electric van platform, and later said it would make a mid-size electric delivery van from the ground up.
Adams said Shyft’s decision to enter the electric van space came in response to demand from a customer base that includes UPS, FedEx and Amazon.com. The company has invested up to $75 million in the program.
Shyft will also sell the platform used in the electric van project to other manufacturers looking to use it in other markets, including recreational vehicles and city buses, Adams said.
Prototypes of the vans will be made at Shyft’s Michigan plant, before the final transition of production to the new plant. The location of this plant is being selected from three locations that Adams did not disclose.
