States in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil are those that showed the most interest in adhering to the price registration minutes for hiring body cameras which must be registered by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP).
Adherence to cameras must follow the new guideline, launched in May this year, which stipulates rules for use, such as use mandatory in actions and recording of incidents as a way of guaranteeing effectiveness and respect for fundamental rights and guarantees.
The states that requested the equipment in the North and Northeast regions are:
North
- Acre
- Amazon
- Amapá
- To
- Rondônia
- Roraima
- Tocantins
North East
- Alagoas
- Pernambuco
- Ceará
- Paraíba
- Piauí
- Sergipe
In addition to these, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio de Janeiro and Paraná also showed interest in the ministry.
Seven of the ten most violent municipalities in Brazil in 2023 are in the Northeast region, according to data from the Brazilian Public Security Yearbook, released by the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP) in July this year.
At the top of the ranking was the municipality of Santana (AP), in the North.
The ministry states that body cameras reduce the use of force and complaints about police conduct by 25% to 61%, and the underreporting of cases of domestic violence, according to scientific evidence.
Almost 27 million in financing
To encourage and facilitate the adoption of body cameras by public security bodies, Minister Ricardo Lewandowski established, through an ordinance, the possibility for states to use resources from the National Public Security Fund (FNSP) to acquire and implement the equipment.
Since 2019, eight states have received FNSP funding for body camera projects. In total, they were R$ 26.7 million in incentive for states:
