North and South Korea exchange ballistic missile launches and raise alarms in Japan

The exchange of ballistic missiles between North Korea and South Korea has caused international concern and has triggered the alerts of the authorities after being hit in the Sea of Japan just off their respective coasts, the limit that divides the two nations.

Apparently, the war tension arose on November 2, when North Korea reportedly launched at least 23 missiles into the Sea of Japan, one of which, the South Korean General Staff assures, fell 26 km away. south of the maritime border between the north and south of both nations.

In addition to launching the missiles, the North Koreans launched 100 artillery rounds, attacks to which Seoul, the capital of South Korea, did not sit idly by and responded by firing three high-precision air-to-ground missiles that, apparently, they landed 60 km from the Northern Limit Line.

The South Army retaliated against North Korea after one of the launched missiles fell 57 kilometers east of the city of Sokcho and another flew in the direction of Ullengdo Island, Ulleung County, located in the Sea of Japan. All this in order to send the message to the North Koreans that the country has the capacity to respond to their attacks or any provocation.

Missiles launched by the two Koreas into the Sea of Japan

Recently, they (North Korea) have been successively launching ballistic missiles and relentlessly and unilaterally increasing their provocations. North Korea’s series of actions threatens the peace and security of Japan, the region and the international community. It is absolutely unacceptable.

– Gen Nakatani, Minister of Defense of Japan

Although the launches in the Sea of Japan were taken as actions that pointed to a new nuclear test, the number of missiles launched recently has been carried out in a period of 10 hours, so the South Korean military reported that it was a violation of the military agreement made between the two Koreas, which consisted in ending any provocation immediately.

Yoon Suk-yeo, President of South Korea

After the missiles launched by South Korea, the North Korean army in Pyongyang fired another six missiles from Wonsan in the direction of the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea, an exchange of launches that worsens the climate of regional tension. Furthermore, this happened just as Seoul and Washington are practicing air maneuvers in the region.

Given the situation between the two Koreas, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, asked the country to take the necessary measures so that the parties involved meet and have a conversation in an environment that is conducive to dialogue and manage to immediately desist from any provocative action.
