North Korea broke its silence today over the Russian invasion of Ukraine, blaming the “hegemonic policy” and “authoritarianism” of the United States and the West.
This was Pyongyang’s first official announcement, five days after the start of the war, with North Korea’s foreign ministry saying the West was guilty of “abuse of power”.
“The main cause of the Ukrainian crisis is solely due to the hegemonic policies of the United States and the West, which are imposed by authoritarianism and abuse of power against other countries,” the North Korean news agency KCNA quoted an unnamed ministry spokesman as saying.
North Korea has also accused Washington and its allies of “ignoring Russia’s reasonable and legitimate demands” for guarantees of its security. “They are systematically undermining the European security environment, seeking NATO enlargement to the east, including the blatant development of offensive weapons systems,” the KCNA reported.
“Reality proves once again that as long as there is a unilateral and bipartisan US policy that threatens the peace and security of a sovereign state, there will never be peace in the world,” the statement concluded.
