North Korea’s foreign ministry strongly condemns the new show of military force by the US and its allies in the region, according to a statement issued by the North Korean state news agency (KCNA) today. “We strongly condemn the hostile behavior of the US resorting to reckless displays of military power together with its allies,” the North Korean ministry said in a statement, in which it spoke of “a clear threat and serious challenge to the security of the region.” Pyongyang is sounding the alarm over political and military tension on the Korean peninsula, which “is exposed to the risk of a flare-up” that would have unpredictable consequences. The North Korean foreign ministry points to Australia’s recent participation in US-South Korean air drills, joint US-Japan military exercises and the deployment of a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to the region, among other things.
