North Korea confirms ‘major final stage’ test for spy satellite

North Korea’s state news agency KCNA said on Monday that the country conducted an “important final stage” test on Sunday for the development of a spy satellite that it aims to complete by April 2023.

The report comes a day after the South Korean and Japanese military reported North Korea launching two intermediate-range ballistic missiles towards its east coast.

Pyongyang’s National Aerospace Development Administration conducted the test at its northwest Sohae satellite launch station to review its satellite imagery capability, data transmission and ground control systems, according to KCNA.

A vehicle carrying a simulated satellite, which also included a color camera with a resolution of 20 meters, two multispectral cameras, image transmitters and receivers, a control device and a storage battery, was fired at the “high angle” of 500 km.

“We confirmed important technical indicators, such as camera operating technology in the space environment, data processing and transmission capacity of communication devices, tracking and accuracy of the ground control system,” said a spokesman for the entity, according to KCNA.

The spokesperson called the test the “final process of launching a reconnaissance satellite” which will be completed in April.

KCNA also released two low-resolution black-and-white images of the South Korean capital Seoul and the port city of Incheon, which it said were taken during Sunday’s launch.
