North Korea is likely to face stronger sanctions, including measures aimed at reducing its cyber-attack capabilities if it carries out a nuclear test it is preparing, South Korea’s foreign minister said on Wednesday.
Park Jin, who took office in May as new president Yoon Suk-yeol’s top diplomat, said North Korea had completed preparations for what would be its first nuclear test since 2017.
North Korea is already under several United Nations (UN) sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs, and the UN Security Council would likely adopt a “much stronger and narrower” resolution if it goes ahead with the deal. testing, including measures against its hackers, Park said.
“There needs to be stronger sanctions for North Korean IT workers stationed abroad who raise funds through illegal cyber hacking activities,” he told a news conference.
The United States and South Korea said that North Korea mobilized thousands of hackers to steal funds, including cryptocurrencies, to finance its weapons.
North Korea’s Foreign Ministry has denied this accusation and says its weapons programs are for its defense.
