North Korea: Fired ‘three ballistic missiles of unknown type’ into Sea of Japan

In launch of at least “three ballistic missiles of unknown type” towards the “East Sea”, which is also known as the Sea of Japan, proceeded on Saturday morning North Koreaaccording to what was announced by the South Korean General Staff of National Defense.

New launches have been added to Pyongyang’s series of weapons tests this year, the number of which is unprecedented, amid escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula.

The Japanese Coast Guard, for its part, announced that North Korea launched at least one ballistic missile and soon after issued a warning of a possible second missile. It said at least one had already gone down outside the Japanese exclusive zone (EZZ).

Today’s weapons tests follow an announcement by South Korea’s defense ministry on Friday that it had successfully tested a solid-fueled “vehicle” (rocket) capable of putting a spacecraft into orbit.

Not counting today’s launches, North Korea had already conducted about 70 weapon launches in 38 tests in 2022including at least eight intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), according to South Korea’s national Yonhap news agency.

On Monday, North Korean UAVs intruded into South Korean airspace, prompting Seoul to rush fighter and attack helicopters to shoot them down. It was the first episode of this nature since 2017.

More than ten UN Security Council resolutions theoretically prohibit North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and have imposed heavy economic sanctions on it. Pyongyang defies them, citing its right to national defense.

South Korean and US officials have warned for months that North Korea is preparing to conduct another nuclear weapon testthe seventh in its history.

Seoul and Washington, for their part, have multiplied their joint land, naval and air force high schools this year.
