North Korea fires ballistic missiles before meeting between Kim Jong Un and Putin in Russia

North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles early on Wednesday (13), ahead of an expected meeting between Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin in Russia, according to South Korean officials.

The two missiles were launched from North Korea’s Sunan area into waters off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula between 11:43 am and 11:53 am (local time), according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). .

The South Korean military has stepped up vigilance while maintaining a posture of full readiness in close cooperation with the United States, the JCS added.

Both missiles have already landed, the Japanese Coast Guard said, citing the Japanese Defense Ministry, although it did not specify where exactly the projectiles landed.

Possible arms talks

Kim and Putin could meet as early as Wednesday morning local time, according to the host of one of the most popular programs on Russian state television.

US officials have warned that weapons talks could be on the table during the talks, which could lead to North Korea supplying weapons for Russia to use on the battlefield against Ukraine.
