North Korea fires long-range missile ahead of South Korean president’s trip to Japan

North Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile on Thursday in the country’s time zone, according to officials in Japan and South Korea, on the same day that the leaders of those two countries are expected to meet. gather in Japan for the first summit in 12 years.

At least one unidentified ballistic missile was fired in waters off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Japan’s Ministry of Defense also confirmed the launch, estimating that the missile would land outside its Exclusive Economic Zone, approximately 550 kilometers east of the Korean Peninsula.

The South Korean military was maintaining a posture of full readiness while cooperating closely with the US, the JCS said.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is due to arrive in Japan on Thursday for a summit his cabinet hailed as “an important milestone” in the development of bilateral relations.
