THE Korea North said it fired more than 130 artillery rounds into the sea on the east and west coasts on Monday after spotting military exercises across the border in the south.
Some of the shots landed in a safe zone near the sea border, in what Seoul said was a violation of a 2018 inter-Korean accord aimed at reducing tensions.
The South Korean military sent several warning communications to the Korea of the North about the shooting, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The military of Korea Northern troops conducted the firing after detecting dozens of “shells” fired in the south near the shared border, state news agency KCNA reported, citing a spokesman for the General Staff of the People’s Army of the North. Korea🇧🇷
“The enemy must immediately cease military actions that cause tensions to escalate in areas close to the front lines where visual surveillance is possible,” the spokesman said, warning that the Korea of the North would respond firmly and with overwhelming military action to any provocation.
THE Korea South Africa and the United States were conducting a joint exercise near the border in Cheorwon County, in the middle of the peninsula, on Monday. The exercise will continue on Tuesday.
