North Korea fires strategic cruise missiles, state media says

North Korea conducted a strategic cruise missile test on Saturday (25), state media KCNA reported.

The country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, supervised the test, according to the report, which described the action as testing an “important weapons system”.

The strategic cruise missiles traveled 1,500 kilometers and flew about seven seconds before reaching their targets, KCNA reported.

The news highlighted that the missile test is part of plans to build national defense capabilities against potential enemies.

Earlier this month, North Korean state media also reported that Kim oversaw a successful test of a new intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile (IRBM).

North Korea promises tough stance against US

In another KCNA report on Sunday (26), local time, North Korea’s Foreign Ministry promised the “toughest counteraction” against the United States as long as the country “refuses” Pyongyang’s sovereignty.

The ministry also blamed the military alliance and joint exercises between South Korea and the US for the growth in tensions in the region.

The statement comes after US President Donald Trump said in an interview on Thursday (23) that he would contact Kim Jong-un, as they developed a working relationship in Trump’s first term.

Kim promised to continue efforts to strengthen his military.

“Kim Jong-un stated that North Korea will always make strenuous efforts… to carry out its important mission and duty of upholding sustainable and lasting peace and stability based on a more powerfully developed military muscle in the future,” they highlighted.
