North Korea today joined a new arms test as the isolated country embarked on a race against time to advance its armaments programs.
The launch is the 16th known launch this year by North Korea, hours after the announcement of the first coronavirus outbreak in the country, which led to the declaration of a “more serious national emergency” and the imposition of a national lockdown.
The South Korean Armed Forces General Staff announced that North Korea’s latest weapons test included three short-range ballistic missiles fired from the Sunan area of the North Korean capital Pyongyang.
The Japanese Coast Guard said, citing the Ministry of Defense, that North Korea had fired a missile, which could be a ballistic missile, and that the missile had already been dropped.
The missile appears to have fallen outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (AOZ), NHK reported.
The previous test of the weapon, carried out by Pyongyang on Saturday, was a ballistic missile fired from a submarine.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledged last month to accelerate the development of the country’s nuclear arsenal as talks with the United States on denuclearization are at a standstill.
The United States and South Korea have said the first nuclear test since 2017 could take place as early as this month.
