North Korea launches ballistic missile – It has traveled about 500 kilometers, say the Japanese

Japan’s Defense Minister Nobuo Kisi said today that the missile, which was launched earlier from North Korea and is considered to be ballistic, had traveled a distance of 500 kilometers.

It fell into the sea, outside the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Japan, Mr. Kisi explained to reporters.

North Korea launches – apparently ballistic – missile of unknown type to the east, to the sea, earlier today, the authorities of the countries of the region announced, a few days after the commitment of the leader Kim Jong Un to strengthen the capabilities of its armed forces to address the volatile international situation, as he put it.

The South Korean staff simply stated that the rocket was aimed at the sea, without giving further details.

In 2021, North Korea announced that it had successfully tested a new type of ballistic missile, launched from a submarine, a new long-range cruise missile, a train-launched weapon, and a supersonic missile.

The weapons test comes as North Korea does not respond to a US proposal to start diplomatic contacts between the two countries in order to resume negotiations.

During a landmark meeting of Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party last week, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his willingness to step up his country’s military capabilities, which have been severely sanctioned by the international community.

Pyongyang-Washington talks are at a standstill following the failure in 2019 of a meeting between Kim Jong Un and then-US President Donald Trump in Hanoi.

Since Joe Biden took office almost a year ago, the United States has repeatedly stated that it is ready to begin contacts anywhere and without preconditions with North Korea. Pyongyang, however, has so far rejected the offer.
