North Korea launches ballistic missiles, officials say

North Korea fired ballistic missiles off its east coast on Wednesday (18), South Korean and Japanese authorities said. The launch comes days after they unveiled a uranium enrichment facility and vowed to increase their nuclear arsenal.

Japan’s Defense Ministry said the North Korean government appeared to have used a ballistic missile, and the Japanese coast guard said the projectile had already landed.

According to Yonhap news agency, the missile was launched off the east coast of South Korea.

Japan’s coast guard said about 30 minutes after the first firing that North Korea had launched another ballistic missile.

North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday last week, its first such launch in more than two months. The country described the operation as a test of a new 600mm multiple launch rocket system.

The latest launch also came days after the country showed for the first time images of centrifuges that produce fuel for nuclear bombs, while leader Kim Jong Un visited a uranium enrichment facility and called for more weapons-grade material to boost the arsenal.
