North Korea marks 110th anniversary of Kim Il Sung’s birth

North Korea today marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of its founder Kim Il Sung, state media reported, without unraveling the mystery surrounding a possible military parade during which Pyongyang may unveil new weapons. .

April 15, “Sun Day”, is one of the most important holidays in North Korea due to the birth of the grandfather of the current leader Kim Jong Un and the founder of this country that has a nuclear weapon.

Three weeks before today’s anniversary, North Korea has launched the largest intercontinental ballistic missile test in its history. It is the first time that Kim Jong Un’s most powerful weapons have been launched at full range since 2017, violating a moratorium that was observed until then.

South Korean officials, as well as the US chief envoy to North Korea, say a nuclear test could be carried out as part of today’s celebrations marking the 110th anniversary of the country’s founder. They are also awaiting the possible holding of a military parade, in which new weapons may be unveiled.

However, North Korean state media have so far made no reference to such incidents.

The Seoul-based NK News website reports that its sources in North Korea heard helicopters and jets flying low over Pyongyang shortly after midnight yesterday, Thursday, suggesting that a military parade had already taken place.

However, another expert said that from now on it seems possible that the main military parade in Pyongyang will take place on April 25, the day of the anniversary of the founding of the North Korean army.

“As the two anniversaries are only 10 days apart, it seems a bit difficult to organize a parade on both occasions,” said Yang Mu-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies.

On previous anniversaries, Pyongyang had broadcast images of the military parades on state television several hours after they took place, without announcing them in advance in the official newspapers.

Kim Il Sung died in 1994, but remains the country’s “Eternal President”.

North Koreans learn to honor Kim Il Sung and his son Kim Jong Il from birth, and all adults wear badges with the image of one of the two men.
