North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a uranium enrichment facility and requested new centrifuges to produce more material for nuclear bombs, state media reported Friday (13) local time.
The report on Kim’s visit to the Nuclear Weapons Institute and a weapons-grade nuclear materials production base was accompanied by photographs offering a rare glimpse into North Korea’s nuclear program, which is banned under several UN Security Council resolutions.
The photos show Kim walking between long rows of metal centrifuges, the machines that enrich uranium. The report did not specify when the visit took place or the location of the facility.
State media also released photographs of Kim overseeing the test launch of a new 600mm multiple launcher rocket system and inspecting the North Korean military’s special operations force training base to conduct a combat drill.
Repercussion
South Korea’s Unification Minister reacted to the photos and said South Korea will never accept the North’s possession of nuclear weapons. He condemned the uranium enrichment facility.
