North Korea reports six new deaths amid Covid-19 outbreak

North Korea on Tuesday reported six new deaths from Covid-19 amid a wave of the disease sweeping the country.

Approximately 270,000 people have symptoms of fever, bringing the total number to 1.4 million, according to KCNA state media reports on Tuesday.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un led an emergency meeting of the Politburo (committee of communist parties) and ordered the military to be used to stabilize medicine supplies in the city of Pyongyang.

“All provinces, cities and counties in the country have been totally closed and work units, production units and residential units isolated since the morning of May 12, and a rigorous and intensive examination of all people is being carried out,” the report said. KCNA on Sunday (15).

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared on Monday (16) that it is following the outbreak of the disease in the country with concern. In a press release, the entity reiterated its commitment to support the country in its response to the pandemic.

“WHO is concerned and ready to support the government and people of North Korea to respond to the pandemic and save lives,” said Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia.

“As the country has not yet started vaccination against Covid-19, there is a risk that the virus will spread quickly between people unless it is reduced with immediate and appropriate measures,” Singh continued.
