North Korea status as a state with nuclear weapons can never be reversed, no matter how much the United States and its Asian Allies demand, the state media said on Wednesday (9), citing the powerful sister of the country’s supreme leader Kim Yo Jong.
The comments, which the state news agency KCNA said they were issued on Tuesday (8), were a probable response to the joint statement of South Korean Foreign Ministers, Japan and the United States on the sidelines of an NATO meeting last week.
Foreign ministers of the three countries reaffirmed the “commitment to the complete denuclearization” of North Korea, according to the joint statement.
The position of the northern nuclear weapon state, along with its “substantial and very strong nuclear dissuasion”, is the result of an external hostile threat and “does not change, no matter how desperately someone deny,” said Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to KCNA.
“We don’t care about anyone’s denial and recognition and we never change our choice,” she said. “This is our unshakable choice that can never be reversed by any cunning physical force or device.”
North Korea has sought nuclear weapons despite the sanctions of the UN Security Council over the years, since it first conducted a underground nuclear detonation test in 2006.
From then on, it is believed that it has developed an arsenal of nuclear weapons, although it has not performed any atmospheric nuclear testing.
Washington’s policy and its Asian allies have been completely dismantling the northern nuclear program, but analysts believe Pyongyang has already surpassed the point of agreeing with any agreement to achieve this goal.
US President Donald Trump called northern “nuclear power” and suggested that he would sit again with leader Kim Jong Un, with whom he had unprecedented dome meetings during his first term in an attempt to relieve tensions.
