North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with senior Russian security official Sergei Shoigu and discussed deepening strategic dialogue between the two countries, state media KCNA reported on Saturday (14).
They had a “comprehensive exchange of views on regional and international situations” and reached a satisfactory consensus on issues including further “cooperation to safeguard mutual security interests,” KCNA said.
Kim said North Korea will continue to expand cooperation with Russia in line with the strategic partnership between the two countries, KCNA reported.
The United States and Ukraine, among other countries, as well as independent analysts, say Kim is helping Russia in its invasion of Ukraine by providing rockets and missiles in exchange for economic and military assistance from Moscow.
Moscow and Pyongyang deny the accusations but have pledged to increase military cooperation and signed a comprehensive strategic partnership at a summit in June.
Shoigu, who was Russia’s defense minister until May and is now secretary of the Security Council, signaled the beginning of closer ties between North Korea and Russia with his visit to Pyongyang in July last year.
On that occasion, he stood side by side with Kim as he watched North Korea’s military parade displaying nuclear-capable missiles and attack drones, as the first Russian defense official to visit North Korea since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
