North Korean train crosses border with China for first time since border closure

A North Korean commercial train arrived in a city on the Chinese border today, which may be the first time a train has crossed the border since it closed due to the Covid-19, according to media reports.

North Korea has not officially announced any COVID-19 cases and has imposed strict measures against the coronavirus, such as border closures and restrictions on domestic travel since the pandemic broke out in early 2020.

A commercial train from North Korea crossed the Yalu River Railway Bridge arriving in the Chinese city of Dandong today, according to Yonhap, the South Korean news agency.

It was not clear if the train was carrying cargo to China but it is likely to return to North Korea tomorrow with “emergency supplies”, sources told Yonhap.

The arrival of the train was also reported by the Japanese news agency Kyodo.

Although Chinese authorities indicate that limited trade continues to be carried out, most shipments appear to be arriving in North Korean ports and not entering the country by train crossing the land border.

After nearly two years of closed borders, some humanitarian aid missions have begun arriving in the country, although shipments of basic supplies, such as food, remain blocked, according to United Nations agencies.
