North Macedonia at the mercy of fires – One dead, burnt houses and evacuation of entire villages

The fire that is burning forest areas in North Macedonia yesterday Monday caused the death of one person, as announced by the crisis management center of the country. According to authorities, more than 41 fires remained active yesterday afternoon, most of them in the eastern part of the Balkan state. Many houses were destroyed by the fire and residents of several villages were forced to leave their homes in a hurry. The director of the crisis response center Stojantse Agelov confirmed the death of a resident of the village of Kokosinye, near the city of Kumanovo (north-east). “The way these fires occurred, almost simultaneously, and the way they spread, due to the wind, makes it very difficult to extinguish them,” he stressed. Since the beginning of July, fires have consumed thousands of hectares of vegetation in the country. In 2021, some 100,000 acres had burned. Source: RES
