Northeast accumulates losses of more than R$ 3 billion with rains in 6 months

Northeastern cities affected by storms accumulate more than R$ 3.1 billion in losses in the last six months, according to a survey by the National Confederation of Municipalities. Also according to the data, the state of Bahia was the main financially affected, registering more than R$ 2.5 billion in losses.

The survey considers the period from December 1, 2021 to May 30, 2022. During this period, 475 emergency situation decrees in the Region requested support from the federal government — recognition of emergency situation and public calamity is essential for requesting financial resources from the federal government.

By sector, the Confederation points to the housing area as the most affected, with losses of R$ 823.5 million. Then comes the agricultural sector, with R$ 802.3 million in financial damages and the public works and infrastructure sector, with R$ 728.4 million.

Storms in the Northeast

The Northeast registers 132 deaths as a result of the heavy rains that hit the region since last week, causing landslides and floods. Among the affected states, Pernambuco is under the highest alert, with 91 confirmed deaths so far.

According to the system of the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters (Cemaden), nine municipalities in the metropolitan region of Recife are classified at very high risk for rains and landslides. There is a possibility that the rains will intensify in the coming days.
