Northern Macedonia: Albanian ‘Alternative’ party agrees with Zaef on coalition

The Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Zoran Zaef, and the leader of this party, Afrim Gassi, reached an agreement in principle on the participation of the current Albanian opposition party “Alternativa” in the governing coalition. Skopje.

According to a statement by the government of Northern Macedonia, in the coming days the consultations between the two sides will continue regarding the distribution of the portfolios that “Alternative” will undertake in the new government.

According to all indications, the “Alternative” will join the governing coalition after December 12, when the nominations for the new leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party (SDSM) are planned.

It is recalled that Zoran Zaef submitted his resignation from the leadership of SDSM last Friday, at the same time opening the process of electing a new president of the party who, in all probability, will succeed him as the prime minister of the country.

The current Deputy Minister of Finance, Dimitar Kovacevski, who is the only one so far who has expressed his intention to be the candidate for president of this party, is the most dominant for the new leader of SDSM and the new Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia.

The participation in the government of the small Albanian party “Alternative” is probably considered necessary, in order for the current government, with a slightly different shape, to regain the parliamentary majority and complete its term, which typically lasts another two and a half years.

At this stage, with the recent departure of the Albanian “BESA” party from the ruling coalition, the government of Zoran Zaef does not have a majority in Parliament, as it is supported by only 59 deputies, out of 120 in the entire Parliament.

The Albanian party “Alternative”, which according to all indications will move to the government camp, has four deputies, while the government could be supported by the deputy Kastriot Rexhepi, who was expelled from “BESA” because on November 11 and the last At that moment, he literally decided to abstain from the meeting of the Parliament, at which the motion of censure against the government submitted by the opposition was to be considered, and in this way he had given the “kiss of life” to Zaef’s government.

In the current government, in addition to the SDSM and some smaller parties with which it cooperates, the largest Albanian party in Northern Macedonia, Ali Ahmeti’s DUI, also participates.

These developments take place after the Social Democrats suffered a heavy defeat in the October 31st municipal elections in northern Macedonia, for which Zaef claimed responsibility and said he would resign as party leader and prime minister.
