The population of Northern Macedonia has decreased by about 10% in the last 20 years, according to the census data conducted last September, which were announced today by the National Statistical Service of the country.
It was the first census in the country, after almost 20 years. The previous one took place in 2002.
Specifically, the population of the country, based on the census conducted from 5 to 30 September 2021, amounts to 1,836,713 people, compared to 2,020,000 from the 2002 census.
58.44% said “Macedonians” (64.18% in the 2002 census), while 24.30% said “Albanians” (25.17%). Also, 3.86% said “Turks” (3.85%), 2.53% said “Roma” (2.66%), 1.3 “Serbs” (1.8%), 0.87% “Bosnians” (0.85%) and 0.47% “Vlachs” (0.5%). In this census, 294 people (0.02%) declared themselves “Greeks”, compared to 422 in the 2002 census.
The population of the country’s largest city, Skopje, according to the census is 526,000.
