Northern Macedonia – coronavirus: New measures after the rapid increase in cases

Alarm has on signals on Northern Macedonia due to the rapid increase in coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. Authorities have reintroduced restrictions on access to cafes, restaurants and public events to address a new outbreak of the epidemic and to motivate the population to get vaccinated, sparking outrage and protests.

From Monday (16/8), only people who have to show will be accepted in restaurants, concerts and other public events vaccination certificate with at least one dose or certificate of recovery from Covid in the last 45 days.

Only the outdoor areas of restaurants and cafes will operate and the number of customers is limited to 30, the government announced, adding that the owners must take care to comply with the restrictive measures.

The government, according to the Athens News Agency, has also imposed high fines for offenders, starting at 250 euros for individuals and can reach up to 30,000 euros for legal entities depending on their size.

About 2,000 people protested the measures yesterday in the capital Skopje, burning masks and demanding the resignation of government officials.

The imposition of new measures follows the sudden increase in the number of cases after the relaxation of the previous package. Health Minister Venko Filipce said only 10% of new cases were vaccinated. Only one million of the 2 million people in Northern Macedonia have received at least one dose of Covid vaccine.
