Northern Macedonia: Zoran Zaef overcame the motion of censure

It seemed that the motion of censure would not bear fruit against his government Zoran Zaef in Northern Macedonia and finally that happened. Due to lack of quorum at the meeting of its Parliament Northern Macedonia, which was convened yesterday (11/11) with the only item on the agenda being the motion of censure.

MPs from the ruling coalition parties abstained from the meeting and only 60 MPs were present in the House of Representatives – all belonging to the opposition, supported the motion of censure, but with this number it was impossible to have a quorum for the meeting, resulting in Speaker of Parliament, o Talat Xhaferi, after a long break from the meeting, to announce shortly before midnight that it was not possible to consider the recent censure and vote on it, and therefore the government is continuing its work. Late in the evening, the opposition deputies also left the meeting. The Parliament of Northern Macedonia has 120 seats.

“Drama” with an Albanian MP

The MP was absent from the opposition ranks Castriot Rexhepi, of the small Albanian party BESA, who earlier posted on a social networking site that he would not participate because he considers a political crisis necessary for the country at this critical time.

“The process of the country’s Euro-Atlantic integration is one of the main goals of me and the BESA movement. Given the current political situation with the resignation of Prime Minister Zaef and due to the process and the strong messages from strategic partners, the US and the EU, which were sent to me by high-ranking diplomats, that the country has a high chance of receiving an accession date with the EU, I have decided not to attend this parliamentary session, which will call into question a vital goal of the country. “As a political and conscientious MP, I came to a difficult decision, guided by the interests of the people and the country, which does not need a political crisis at this important time,” he explained. Mr. Rexhepi.

Opposition parties, including BESA, left suspicions even for his “kidnapping” Castriot Rexhepi, wondering if his life is in danger. However, he himself Mr. Rexhepi, an unexpected person of the day, in a videotaped message assured him that he is well and safe and that he will appear in public after, as he noted, the threats he receives from people in his own faction disappear.

The small party BESA has three deputies. Until last week, he was part of his governing coalition Zoran Zaef, but withdrew from it and drafted the motion of censure of the opposition against the government.

Reactions

THE Alexander Nikoloski, the vice-president of the largest opposition party VMRO-DPMNE, shortly before the end of the Parliament session, while the opposition MPs were already leaving, he demanded the holding of early parliamentary elections as soon as possible, judging that this option is the best for the country.

THE Mr. Nikoloski argued that a climate of political instability has now been created, as, as he stressed, his government Zoran Zaef it is now a minority government and does not have the “legitimacy” to exercise power.

From his own side o Jovan Mitrevski, the parliamentary representative of the governor Social Democratic Party (SDSM), said his leader VMRO-DPMNE, Christian Mickowski, he should not look for an alibi to justify the failure of the opposition’s motion of censure, as he said, he bears full responsibility for this development. THE Mr. Mitrevsky He also said that in the near future the government will increase its seats and power in Parliament – implying that one or more MPs from the opposition parties are preparing to move to the government camp.

A new motion of censure against the government may be tabled after three months, unless it has the support of a majority of Members. In this case, a motion of censure may be tabled at any time.

Minority government

THE Zoran Zaef, however, he probably does not feel particularly “happy”, since he is currently leading a minority government. The coalition under the Social Democratic Party (SDSM) has 43 deputies; the Albanian party has 15 deputies DUI of Ali Ahmeti and one Democratic Party of Albanians, which supports the government. In all, the ruling coalition parties hold only 59 seats in parliament.

The opposition has 60 deputies: the coalition under VMRO-DPMNE 44, the coalition of Albanian parties Alliance for Albanians-Alternative 12, the BESA 2 (three with Kastriot Rexhepi, but it is not clear which position he will take in the future) and the party Left (“Left”) 2 deputies.
