Northern Macedonia: Zoran Zaef re-elected leader of Social Democratic Party

The chairman of the ruling Social Democratic Union (SDSM), Zoran Zaef was re-elected to the leadership of his faction, in the internal party elections of the ruling party that were held on Sunday.

About 69,000 members had the right to vote in these by-elections, and Zaef, the sole candidate for the SDSM leadership, received more than 60,000 votes. The participation rate was 90%.

SDSM members went to the party’s polling stations across the country and voted at the polls. Electronic voting was not possible due to technical shortcomings.

It was the first time in the history of a party in the country that its leader was elected directly by the members, by voting and not by a party congress.

Zaef said that with today’s vote, the party is entering a “new era” and announced a renewal of its party, with fresh and innovative ideas and new faces, as he said.

Zoran Zaef (46) has been leading the SDSM since 2013, when he succeeded Branko Crvenkovski.

Zoran Zaef has been Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia since May 2017.
