Norway: Country strengthens army against ‘more dangerous’ Russia

The Norwegian government announced today that it will release at least an additional 300 million euros this year, mainly to strengthen its military presence in the Far North near the border with Russia, following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Although a Russian attack on Norway is not possible, we must realize that we have a neighbor in the east that has become more dangerous and unpredictable,” Norwegian Defense Minister Odd Roger Enoksen told a news conference.

The fund will increase the Navy’s presence in the north, intensify army and reserve training, increase stockpiles of ammunition, fuel and other critical equipment, improve Allied reception facilities, and strengthen cyber defense. information services.

Major naval, air and ground exercises are currently being conducted in Norway with the participation of approximately 30,000 troops from 27 countries, NATO members or Alliance partners (Sweden and Finland).

The Cold Response 2022 high schools are precisely intended to test Norway’s ability to receive Allied aid in the event of an external attack, in accordance with Article 5 of the Charter of the Alliance which requires all its members to seek the help of one of them in the event of an attack.

They also allow Allied troops to be trained to fight in the cold.
