Norway: Kongsberg residents shocked by massacre in quiet city

The eyewitnesses witnesses of the archery attack in Norway They narrated today the horror they faced in their neighborhoods on Wednesday afternoon.

The quiet city of Kongsberg, where no major events usually take place, is mired in mourning. On Wednesday, for more than half an hour, a man armed with a bow plowed its streets with picturesque, wooden houses, killing with his deadly arrows five people unknown to him and injuring three others.

The suspect was arrested: He is a Danish citizen, Espen Andersen Broothen, 37, who has lived in Kongsberg for many years and, according to police, has converted to Islam and become radicalized.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, but at the moment the security services are talking about a “terrorist act”.

“I thought I was in Kabul”

Thomas Nielsen was at home when he heard screams. War scenes came to his mind. “I thought I was in Kabul,” he said.

The tragedy unfolded in many parts of the city: in a supermarket, outside of which there were now police guards, and in the surrounding streets. In other neighborhoods, police presence was minimal.

The five victims are four women and a man aged 50 to 70. Police declined to give their details. Outside the church, some left two lighted candles.

«I heard children screaming, barking, then a helicopter flying around my house. I did not sleep at night “, admitted another witness, Terrier Christiansen. When he went shopping, this morning, a few hours after the attack, he headed to a store on the other side of town. “I was looking a little behind me,” he confessed in fear.

An off-duty police officer was injured

At the supermarket in Christiansen neighborhood, the suspect shot an off-duty police officer with his arrows. According to the police, his life is not in danger.

Knud Olaf Ouf was smoking on his doorstep when the unthinkable happened.

“I saw a friend of mine hiding behind a car and suddenly I heard a click. I was an archer and I recognized the sound of the bow and arrow falling on the sidewalk. “Then I saw a man hurrying a child out of a vehicle and running towards my house,” he said.

Brothen will be examined by psychiatrists

In a Western-like scene, Brotten fired several arrows at police officers before being arrested, who responded by firing into the air. During his interrogation, at night, he confessed to his actions.

Brothen will be examined by psychiatrists and tomorrow a judge will decide whether he will be remanded in custody.

Svein Vestad was preparing his dinner when he heard a commotion, shouting and a shot – apparently from the police firing into the air – from his open window. “I continued to cook. “There is no reason for me to go out,” he said. Immediately afterwards he heard and saw the sirens and the lights of ambulances and patrol cars in his neighborhood. He thought the police had gone to arrest someone next door.

Vestad knew one of the victims who was killed a few meters away, on the same street.

“I am not used to taking out my phone to take pictures in such situations. But I called the police and they told me to stay at my house. “Automatically, it became even more unlikely that I would go out.”
