After a spectacular highway chase, the head of an extremist, anti-Islamic group in Norway was attacked by a car, minutes after burning a Koran, on the outskirts of Oslo.
Norwegian police have announced that they have arrested two people, including the driver of the vehicle that deliberately crashed into Lars Toren’s 4×4 and overturned it. Toren is the head of the radical organization “Stop the Islamization of Norway” (Sian).
The five occupants of the vehicle suffered minor injuries. One of them had to be taken to a hospital.
In a video showing the entire episode, which was posted on Facebook, Lars Toren and other members of his organization first drive to Mortensrud, an Oslo suburb with a large Muslim community.
Finger-picked anti-Islamists burn a Koran at an intersection, prompting a backlash from residents, who try to put out the flames.
A small crowd quickly gathers and protests are heard, mainly from a woman who grabs what’s left of the burning book, encouraging Toren’s group. He then gets into a silver Mercedes as passenger.
The 4×4 of anti-Islamic activists is leaving. But a few seconds later, the Mercedes arrives and knocks it, lightly, onto the side of the road that leads to the freeway.
After attempting to stop the SUV by zig-zagging, the Mercedes accelerates and eventually hits it at high speed, overturning it.
“We have every reason to believe that Sian’s car was deliberately crashed,” police said in a statement.
The driver and her passenger were arrested.
Many far-right, anti-Islamic activists in Scandinavia, such as Danish-Swedish Rasmus Palundan, have in recent years made a habit of burning Korans in neighborhoods where many Muslims live.
These challenges, which they present as “freedom of expression”, often lead to incidents with counter-protesters, as happened recently in Sweden over the Easter weekend.
