Swedish auto giant Volvo is testing a new charging technology for its electric vehicles. It offers to charge electric cars wirelessly, similar to smartphones.
According to Top Gear, Volvo has begun testing a new wireless charging technology it plans to introduce to its future lineup. The tests, which, according to the company’s plan, will last three years, will involve several Volvo XC40 electric crossovers. They will be used as taxis and charged using wireless charging pads built right into the asphalt, developed by Momentum Dynamics. The power of these charging stations will be more than 40 kW.
It is planned that each of the tested Volvo XC40 will be used during testing for more than 12 hours a day and they must travel 100,000 kilometers a year. This will additionally allow evaluating the durability of electric vehicles when used for commercial purposes. Testing will take place in Gothenburg, the large Swedish city that is home to Volvo.
