A couple of weeks before the start of the Qualcomm Tech Summit 2021, the main competitor of the American chip maker, the Taiwanese company MediaTek, held its own conference in California. As part of the event, the chipmaker presented its new flagship Dimensity 9000 5G chipset based on TSMC’s 4nm process technology, and also revealed its plans for the future. And they include not only the mobile market.
Having ousted Qualcomm and secured a 40 percent market share in the mobile chip market, MediaTek now wants to take on the computing industry. The Taiwanese chipmaker plans to start production of processors for Windows PCs. They will be built on ARM architecture and will hit the market in a few years. While the project is at an early stage, and therefore the company did not go into details.
By the way, I must say that MediaTek is already partially present in the computer market. It makes 5G modems for PCs based on Intel processors and even partnered with the American giant in 2019. MediaTek also makes chips for entry-level and mid-range Chromebooks.
