Notary offices will be able to register indigenous names and ethnicities on the birth certificate

The indigenous population now has the right to register elements of cultural identity, such as ethnicity, clan and family group, on a birth certificate through the registry office in São Paulo. This is what the Association of Natural Person Registrars of the State of São Paulo (Arpen-SP) reports.

The change allows indigenous people to register without the need for legal action or a representative, such as a lawyer. The measure also allows documentation to be made in the indigenous language.

Late registration, which occurs when an adult does not have a birth certificate, eliminates the requirement for the Indigenous Administrative Birth Register (RANI), facilitating access to essential documentation.

The president of the National Association of Natural Persons Registrars (Arpen-São Paulo), the change in the standard provides the indigenous population with the same facilities as ordinary citizens.

How to do it

The indigenous person must go to the nearest Civil Registry Office and fill out an application with RG or RANI.

To include ethnicity, clan or family group, it is necessary to present a “Declaration of Belonging”, proving that the indigenous person belongs to a certain ethnic group.

Late birth registration must be carried out by presenting the data, in an application, by representatives of the National Indian Foundation (Funai).
