Professional journalism is essential for the functioning of any democratic regime. It is necessary and urgent, therefore, that the institutions and their representatives put a stop to and condemn the attacks on journalists, in an incisive and recurrent way. It is dishonest to wield that flag in a timely manner. Democracy is exercised on a daily basis, with words and gestures.
The action against journalism is coordinated and cowardly, especially because it targets women professionals. In Brazil, 60% of attacks target women journalists covering politics, according to a report by the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji). A female journalist is attacked, on average, every three days. And it’s not just cases of verbal violence or moral harassment — the data reveal episodes of physical violence.
CNN sympathizes with journalist Vera Magalhães (TV Cultura and Estadão), who yesterday was the victim of state deputy Douglas Garcia (Republicans), during her professional activity in the debate with candidates for the Government of the State of São Paulo.
CNN Brasil also repudiates the recurring attacks on its professionals, especially the anchor Daniela Lima, identified by the Abraji survey as the most attacked in Brazil. CNN Brasil remains firm in its purpose of informing and alongside those who provide service to the country’s democracy.
