Notes from business entities, Lula’s interview and more than 26 August

The release of notes in favor of freedom of expression prepared by entities and business leaders, in addition to the decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) that authorizes poll workers to retain cell phones and the like are among the highlights of this Friday (26).

Business entities issue notes in support of freedom of expression

Entities and business leaders released notes in favor of freedom of expression and expressed concern over the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), to authorize an operation against businessmen. The action was requested by the Federal Police (PF) after the “Metrópoles” portal revealed that the administrators dealt with the possibility of a coup d’état in the event of a victory for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in this year’s presidential election.

The Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp) published a text in which it states that “in the defense of the Democratic State of Law made by Fiesp and other entities, the defense of all its pillars is obviously implicit, which includes freedom of expression and opinion and a free press”. He also says that “these are non-negotiable values”.

Also by way of note, the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Fiergs) expressed “grave concern” with Moraes’ decision. Regarding the businessmen who had warrants executed against them, Fiergs stressed that “first of all they are citizens and voters”. The federation evaluated the decision as an “attitude that does not find shelter in the principle of reasonableness”.

“Fiergs is convinced that the exaggerations will be corrected and stopped, and Brazil will thus be able to resume harmony between the Constituted Powers and the conciliation of institutions with the Nation’s greater objectives, especially in this year in which we celebrate the democratic regime through of the general elections in the country”, adds the statement.

Lula admits corruption at Petrobras, Dilma’s mistakes and compares monthly payment to secret budget

Former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) admitted that there were cases of corruption at Petrobras. In an interview with Jornal Nacional, on TV Globo, the presidential candidate criticized the investigation model used by Operation Lava Jato to investigate irregularities in the state-owned company.

According to the PT, the whistleblowers of the operation “got rich” because of their confessions.

“You can’t say there was no corruption if people confessed. What is more serious is that people confessed and because of people confessing, they became rich because of confessing. In other words, it was a kind of plea bargain, you not only gained freedom for saying what you wanted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, but you also earned half of what you stole. In other words, the theft was made official by the Public Ministry, which I think is insane.”

The PT said that corruption only came to light because PT governments encouraged transparency mechanisms. Lula cited the creation of the Access to Information Law and the Transparency Portal as examples.

The candidate also said that he gave freedom to the Federal Police to investigate.

“[A corrupção] only appears when you allow it to be investigated. It was in my government that we created the Transparency Portal, that we put the CGU as (inaudible) to inspect, that we created the Access to Information Law, that we created the Anti-Corruption Law. […] The Public Ministry was independent, and the Federal Police received more freedom from my government than at any other time in history.”

TSE decides thatand voters must hand over their cell phones to polling stations at the time of voting

In the judgment session this Thursday (25), the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) decided, unanimously, that poll workers are authorized to retain cell phones and the like. The measure corroborates the legislative ban on carrying these types of devices in the voting booth.

The plenary will consider a new text for the resolution that will be in effect during the elections.

“If the voter does not want to leave it with the polling station, he already knows that he must leave it at home, in the car or with a relative to avoid the possibility of illicit recording”, said Minister Alexandre de Moraes during the discussion.

For Moraes, it is not possible and legal to enter the voting booth with cell phones.

“There was a flexibilization of the TSE, allowing as long as it was turned off, in the pocket. Obviously we realize that this is not satisfactory.”, said the minister.

GDP expected to grow more than expected in 2022, and analysts see greater potential

The market has been making serial revisions to this year’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, indicating that the rise will be higher than expected during the first half of the year. And, according to experts, Brazil’s so-called potential GDP indicates an even greater scope for expansion.

O last Focus Bulletin , released on August 22, is forecast to rise by 2.02% this year. At the beginning of 2022, the market forecast was 0.28%. Considering the first quarter, the increase was 1%.

According to Juliana Trece, a researcher at Ibre-FGV, the so-called gap, or distance, between real GDP and the potential calculated by the institute has reduced. Considering the first quarter, it was 1.4%. In the last quarter of 2021, it reached the smallest difference in more than seven years, at -0.4%.

This indicates a recovery of the Brazilian economy in relation to previous years, when the gap was greater, but also a potential for even greater growth in the year.

At the same time, it signals a difficulty in the coming years: making Brazil’s potential GDP grow, reversing unfavorable conditions in the economy today.

STJ swears in new president of the Court; Aras does not attend

Minister Maria Thereza de Assis Moura and Minister Og Fernandes took office, this Thursday (25), as president and vice-president of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ).

The two magistrates will command the STJ in the biennium 2022-2024 — period in which they will also direct the Federal Justice Council (CJF) —, replacing ministers Humberto Martins and Jorge Mussi, respectively.

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was at the table of honor in front of the president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

The two met after an operation against a group of businessmen investigated for defending a coup d’état on WhatsApp. Augusto Aras was not present and due to a pain in his shoulder, he had to go to the doctor. He sent Deputy Attorney General Lindôra Araujo.

Minister Dias Toffoli, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), and Defense Minister Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, spoke briefly before the start of the ceremony. Moraes was greeted by Minister Anderson Torres, Minister of Justice and Public Security, who has criticized him in the past.
