One of Europe's most notorious migrant smugglers has been arrested in Iraq by local authorities, days after the BBC reported on his activities. Barzan Majid, who was known by the nickname “Scorpion”, was arrested on Sunday morning outside his home, as reported by the British network. For several years, Majid and his gang transported thousands of people by boat and truck, in squalid conditions, across the Channel. Last week the BBC tracked him down to Sulaimaniyah in Iraq from where he admitted he had taken thousands of migrants across the Channel: “Maybe a thousand, maybe 10,000. I don't know, I didn't count,” he said characteristically. A senior member of the Kurdistan Regional Government said officials used the BBC's findings to track down Majid. “At 7 am the arrest took place outside his house.
