Notre-Dame Cathedral reopens next week; See the renovation

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, visited Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris this Friday (29). He made one last visit before the reopening of the historic landmark devastated by a fire in 2019. The site has been rebuilt for more than five years and will welcome the public again next week.

On April 15, 2019, the roof of the Gothic-style cathedral burst into flames. In a short time, the fire took over the tower and almost collapsed the main bell towers. All over the world, people watched the fire in horror.

The roof collapsed, but the towers and facade remained.

Drone footage on Friday showed part of the cathedral’s reconstruction from above, while scaffolding remained around part of the facade, as workers rush to finish reconstruction work ahead of the opening ceremony on December 7. .

It is still unclear what exactly caused the fire. French authorities said an electrical fault or a lit cigarette may have been responsible.

Macron will give a speech in front of the cathedral as part of the reopening festivities. Then the Archbishop of Paris, Laurent Ulrich, will use his crosier to knock on the heavy doors of the cathedral.

The archbishop will celebrate a mass on the date, marking the first of eight days of masses dedicated to the reopening and focused on thanking, among others, the donors who paid for the renovations and the firefighters who helped save it. Some of the masses, including the one on the night of December 8, will be open to the public.

A medieval Gothic masterpiece, Notre-Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris) is one of the French capital’s most loved and visited monuments.
