November 19: understand the meaning of national colors on Flag Day

The Brazilian flag celebrates 135 years, this Tuesday (19), when the Brazilian Flag Day . With inspiration from the country’s history, the representation refers to guidelines that inspired the founding of the Republic .

In 1889, the country knew what was to be its universal representation, designed by Raimundo Teixeira Mendes, the construction of the new symbol made the national flag a combination of ideas and representations, explained by historical reasons.

The current national flag maintained the colors of the Imperial Flag, representing the green tone in the same tone as the House of Bragança. The color evokes the richness of forests and matches the vast nature, in the country with more than 8 thousand km².

The presence of the imperial figure continues in the choice of the color yellow, of the House of Habsburg, of Empress Leopoldina, mother of Dom Pedro I. Considered the matriarch of Brazil’s independence, the color that pays homage to her also symbolizes the wealth of natural resources, known worldwide .

Blue has no connection with the imperial family, but in the official version of the Brazilian Army, it represents the sky of Rio de Janeiro, on the date of the Proclamation of the Republic. The constellations, in turn, refer to the federative units, united in the same purpose of “Order and Progress”, which inspired the founders of the Republic.

“Americanized” version

The so-called “republican coup” brought Marechal Deodoro to power, as the first popular representative, after the founding of the Republic. With inspiration from the design used by the flag of the United States of America, the first version of the national flag was presented, being almost a “copy” of the American flag. Look .


The version was not very well accepted, not even by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca himself, who demanded a new version of the national flag, giving rise to what we know and celebrate this Tuesday, on Brazilian Flag Day.
